Preseason Hockey 9/17 2025-09-18 | The Steinbach Sabres Hockey team hosted the rival Lord Selkirk Royals in WHSHL exhibition action at the Southeast Event Centre on Wednesday afternoon in Steinbach. The Sabres opened the scoring with just over four minutes to play in the first period as Carter Doerksen stepped across the blueline and wired a snapshot past the screened Royals netminder. The Royals responded in the second frame with a pair of even-strength goals to take the lead heading into the third period. The Sabres pushed back but found themselves the recipients of a 5-on-3 PK in which the Royals tacked on some insurance with a glove-side snipe. Final score: Lord Selkirk 3 SRSS 1. Vander Fehr and Evan Maynard combined to make 22 of 25 saves in the loss. The Sabres head to the Dakota Community Centre to take on the CJS Olympiens at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, Sept. 23 and to the Selkirk Rec Complex for a rematch with the Royals at 4:00 PM on Thursday, Sept. 25. Boys Soccer 2025-09-17 | The varsity boys soccer team were victorious over the co-opted school team of Green Valley / Ecole Heritage (Pirates) by a score of 7-1 Tuesday evening @ the soccer park in automobile city. The 50 fans in attendance were treated to a soccer 'masterclass' with the Sabres displaying creativity and flair in attack, while maintaining an organized and impenetrable defensive shape. The Sabres opened their account when SRSS captain Hudson Bergen smashed a 25 yard free-kick into the 'top bins' of the GVS net, leaving the Pirates goalie exclaiming....." ARRRRRR you kidding me!" It was a "tough sailing" for the Pirates after that with wave-after-wave of attacks coming from the good ship SRSS. It was a Titanic performance from the Black and Gold with a flood of goals from Johnathan Klassen (2), Eloghosa Emokaro (2), Miguel Martinez (1) and another from captain Bergen to give him a brace (2) on the night. Buoyed by the stellar goaltending of Phillip Wiebe and the sea-worthy play of center-back Jason Scheling, controlling things at the stern, the Sabres sailed to an easy victory over GVS. There was a good spirit to the match and the Pirates harbored no ill-will toward the Sabres back at port. The Sabres crew will next hoist the mainsail on Saturday, when they set a course of west-by-northwest into international waters. Their tournament destination? The yellowhead archipelago and the island of Neepawa - in search of gold. Bon voyage! r the port of Neepawa |
