Each fall, the SRSS celebrates students in Grade 10, 11, and 12 who achieved a level of distinction during their previous school year (Grade 9, 10, or 11). Teachers recognize these students for their excellence, dedication, and hard work across the following categories:

Academic Award

  • Grade Requirement: Minimum (weighted) average of 80%, placing in the top 10% their grade level
  • Calculation: Weighted as 75% compulsory academic courses and 25% electives
  • Credit Requirement: Minimum of 7 credits (for previous grade 9 and 10 students) or 6 credits (for previous grade 11 students)

Vocational Major Award

  • Grade Requirement: Minimum (weighted) average of 80%, placing in the top 10% their grade level
  • Calculation: Weighted as 75% compulsory vocational courses and 25% other courses
  • Credit Requirement: Minimum of 7 credits (for previous grade 9 and 10 students) or 6 credits (for previous grade 11 students)

Athletic Award (Most Important Player of the Year Award)

The Most Important Player (MIP) of the Year Award recognizes the student-athlete who has made the greatest overall contribution to their team during the season. This award is presented for each school sport at the Grade 9, Grade 10, and Grade 11 levels (male and female where applicable).

The recipient demonstrates excellence not only through athletic ability, but also through leadership, commitment, sportsmanship, and the positive impact they have on their teammates and the success of the program.

  • Eligibility Criteria: To be considered for the Most Important Player (MIP) Award, a student-athlete should:
    • Remain in good standing as a member of the school community.
    • Be a member in good standing of the team throughout the season.
    • Demonstrate a high level of skill, effort, and commitment in their sport.
    • Attend practices, games, and team activities consistently, unless excused for valid reasons.
    • Make a significant positive impact on the team’s success through their performance, consistency, and reliability.
    • Demonstrate leadership through attitude, work ethic, preparation, communication, and by setting a positive example for teammates.
    • Display outstanding sportsmanship by showing respect toward teammates, coaches, officials, opponents, and spectators.
    • Represent SRSS and their team with integrity, responsibility, and pride throughout the season.
  • Selection Process: The MIP Award will be selected by the SRSS Phys Ed Department and/or coaching staff of each sport.  Selection will be based on the student-athlete’s overall value to their team throughout the season.  Consideration includes athletic performance, leadership, commitment, work ethic, consistency, sportsmanship, coachability, and the positive influence they have on teammates and the culture of the program.
Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee selection.  The award is intended to recognize the student-athlete whose overall contribution to the team was considered the most significant during that season.

Music and Drama Award
The Music and Drama Award recognizes students who have made an outstanding contribution to the school’s music and/or drama programs through participation, commitment, performance, leadership, and collaboration.

  • Eligibility Criteria: To be considered for this award, a student-athlete should:
    • Participate meaningfully in the school’s music and/or drama programs.
    • Be involved in at least one extra-curricular music or drama opportunity, such as a performance, production, ensemble, festival, concert, musical, or other school-related event.
    • Demonstrate a strong commitment to rehearsals, performances, productions, and program expectations.
    • Contribute positively to the overall success of the group, ensemble, cast, crew, or production.
    • Demonstrate leadership through attitude, preparation, encouragement of others, reliability, and work ethic.
    • Represent the school positively through respect for staff, peers, audiences, and the performance process.
    • Remain in good standing as a member of the school community.
  • Selection Process: Award recipients will be selected by the Music and/or Drama department, with input from staff involved in performances, productions, ensembles, or extra-curricular opportunities where appropriate. Selection will be based on the student’s overall contribution to the music and/or drama programs, including participation, commitment, performance, leadership, collaboration, and extra-curricular involvement.
Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee selection. Final decisions are based on the overall strength of the nominees in a given school year.

Citizenship Award

  • Criteria: Based on student “Learning Behaviour” scores on the report card, combined with staff input.
  • Expectations: Must be an excellent contributor to both class culture and the broader school community.
  • Credit Requirement: Minimum of 7 credits (for previous grade 9 and 10 students) or 6 credits (for previous grade 11 students)

SRSS Scholarships

The SRSS Awards Committee aims to recognize and reward high academic achievement through scholarships and bursaries. The selection criteria aims to identify students who have demonstrated high achievement in a diverse range of subject areas.

To be eligible for a scholarship, a student must:

  • Complete a scholarship application form (aka. Grad Intentions form) in the spring of their graduation year. This form is emailed to grade 12 students in April.
  • Declare themselves attending a post-secondary institute in the fall of their graduating year. Eligible programs include 1-year certificates, 2-year diplomas, and 3- or 4-year degrees. Apprenticeship programs are also included as post-secondary studies for students receiving a technical-vocational scholarship.

Scholarship Categories & Calculations

Locally-Sponsored Academic Scholarships:
Recipients of these scholarships are selected on the basis of an “academic scholarship average”. This average is the weighted average of six 40-level courses as described below. Note out-of-class credits (like work experience) do not qualify; courses must be taken during a scheduled SRSS time slot.
Academic Scholarship Average Calculation:

  • One Math/Science Credit (weighted at 20%): Applied Math MAM40S, Biology BIO40S, Chemistry CHM40S, Physics PHY40S, Pre-Calculus Math MPC40S, University Biology BIO42U/42W, University Calculus CAL42U
  • One Humanities Credit (weighted at 20%): English ENC40S, ENL40S, ETF40S, French FRE40S, Global Issues HGI40S, History: Western Civilization HIS40S, Psychology PSY40S, Spanish SPH40S
  • Two more credits from either list above (each weighted at 20%)
  • Two additional SRSS 40-level credits (each weighted at 10%)

Applied Commerce Scholarships:
Recipients of these awards are selected based on an “applied commerce scholarship average”. Students do not need to be a declared Applied Commerce major to receive these awards.
Applied Commerce Scholarship Average Calculation:

  • One Math Credit (weighted at 10%): MAM40S, MEM40S, MPC40S
  • One English Credit (weighted at 10%): ENC40S, ENL40S, ETF40S
  • Four 40-level Applied Commerce Credits (weighted at 20% each): ACAS40S, ACBM40S, ACBT40S, ACDC40S, ACEC40S, ACTP40S, LAW40S

Note: If there are not enough qualified candidates, the committee may reduce the required commerce courses to three, keeping the overall weight at 80%

Vocational Scholarships:
Recipients of these awards are selected based on a “vocational scholarship average” calculated as follows:

  • One Math Credit (weighted at 10%): MAM40S, MEM40S, MPC40S
  • One English Credit (weighted at 10%): ENC40S, ENL40S, ETF40S
  • Four 40-level courses from within that student’s vocational major (weighted at 20% each)

Additional Considerations:
If student scholarship averages are identical, the committee breaks the tie using the following steps (in order):

  1. Number of course distinctions
  2. Number of total high school credits earned
  3. Average of student’s top 28 credits (from grades 9-12)
  4. Average of all credits earned

How to Claim Your Award
Once you are awarded a scholarship, you must submit the following to the SRSS (via the 11/12 office):

  1. Proof of Enrolment (a fee statement, student ID card, or official timetable)
  2. Confirmation of a Thank-You Letter sent to the award sponsor

Note: The SRSS Awards Committee reviews this information regularly and may change these criteria as the changing focus of education and the development of new curricula may dictate, or in the event of extenuating circumstances surrounding a particular award or recipient.

Scholarships, Bursaries & Awards

  • All are financial awards used for educational purposes.
  • Scholarships are based on academic achievement.
  • Bursaries are based on financial need.
  • Awards are based on need and academic achievement.
  • Some are granted automatically upon application to the post-secondary institution; others require a separate application.
  • Some require a specific number of courses from an approved list of courses.
  • Criteria may include excellent marks, participation in extra-curricular activities, volunteer experience, leadership qualities, or strength of character.

Categories of Scholarship, Bursaries & Awards

  • SRSS – Students must excel in 6 Gr. 12 courses (Gr. 12 phys. ed. does not count) from an approved list of courses, apply to a post-secondary institution for the next school year and submit the SRSS scholarship application form in spring.  The criteria can be found in the scholarship tab above.
  •  Entrance – Students must excel in a specific number of courses from an approved list of courses as determined by the post-secondary institution and apply by the deadline.  Consideration for an entrance scholarship is usually automatic upon application for admission.
  •  Major/Special – Students must excel in a specific number of courses from an approved list of courses as determined by the post-secondary institution and apply by the deadline.  Consideration for a major/special scholarship typically requires a scholarship-specific application in addition to the application for admission.  In order to be eligible, students must also typically meet other criteria such as leadership and involvement in their school and community.  You are encouraged to review the websites of the post-secondary institutions that you are considering for further information.
  •  Employer-sponsored – Some employers offer scholarships and bursaries to their employees who are graduating or to the graduating children of their employees.
  •  External organizations – There are a variety of organizations, employers and private companies who offer scholarships and bursaries to students pursuing a post-secondary education.  Each award has its own set of criteria and deadline as determined by the sponsor of the award (e.g. Loran, Horatio Alger, TD, Schulich).
    Research sites such as:

  • In-Course – There are also scholarships and bursaries available to students once they are registered as a student at their post-secondary institution.  Consideration for these awards typically requires a scholarship-specific application.  You are encouraged to review the websites of the post-secondary institutions that you are considering for further information.

Student Loans & Bursaries

Manitoba Student Aid provides supplemental financial assistance for post-secondary educational purposes to Manitobans with limited finances.  It is based on a formula that compares educational costs to expected contributions, income and assets.  Loans are interest-free while you maintain your full-time student status.  You must begin repayment of the loan six months after you cease to be a full-time student.  (Full-time is considered a minimum of 60% of a full course load.)

Apply in June to see if you are eligible to receive a loan, grant or bursary.
