Shared Health-Mental Health and Addictions School Based Services

Manitoba youth who use alcohol and other mood-altering drugs typically report starting use between the ages of 12-16. Providing Youth Substance Use Counselling services in schools reduces barriers to referral and treatment for students and allows for earlier intervention.

Assessment

Students who are suspended for an alcohol/drug policy violation, or students who voluntarily request help for their substance use, are referred to the Youth Substance Use Counsellor for an assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to gather the information that will help the counsellor and the young person set goals and make an action plan based on the young person’s needs. This may involve a number of individual or group sessions or a combination of both. This part of programming also often involves education on alcohol, drugs and gambling. Following the assessment, the young person may continue to receive counselling on an ongoing basis.

Referral

The Youth Substance Use Counsellor can make referrals to other services within Shared Health or external services as needed in order to help clients meet their goals. They are also available to support parents/guardians of young people in the program.

Public Health at the SRSS

The focus of the SRSS Public Health Nurse is to build relationships with students and staff and to work together to promote and protect the health of all students. Public Health Nurses can provide information to students on the risks of certain activities that can affect their health, and education on healthy relationships, self-care, and sexuality. This is done in classroom settings or individually to meet their specific needs. They also work towards preventing illness by providing immunizations and follow up on communicable diseases. Public Health Nurses can also link students to resources or other healthcare professionals to optimize their overall physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being.

Feel free to stop in to see Andrea, the Public Health Nurse, at the SRSS Health Clinic. Her office hours at SRSS are Tuesdays 1:00 – 4:00 pm and Thursdays 8:30 – 12:00 am.
